Seven signs a listing may be a scam

Scammers copy real photos and use urgency. These signals do not prove fraud, but each is a reason to slow down and verify.

No checklist catches everything, but most housing scams share a handful of patterns.

  • The price is far below similar homes in the same area.
  • The "owner" is abroad, cannot meet, and wants you to send money so they can post the keys.
  • You are asked to pay before seeing the property or to pay a "holding fee" to a personal account.
  • Photos appear on other listings, or the details change between messages.
  • The person avoids video calls or refuses to show the property live.
  • There is heavy pressure: "other people are paying today".
  • They ask you to move the conversation and payment away from the platform.

What to do

Pause, and verify using the routine in our guide to checking a property before you pay. Keep your conversations inside iLIVV so there is a record. If you think a listing or a person is fraudulent, use the report option on the listing or profile. Our team reviews reports and can suspend accounts.
