Shortlet or long let: choosing the right kind of stay

A shortlet is flexible and fully serviced; a long let is cheaper per night and gives you a home. Which fits depends on how long you will stay.

People often ask whether a shortlet or a regular tenancy is better value. The honest answer is that they solve different problems.

When a shortlet makes sense

  • You need a place for days or a few weeks: work trips, relocation, waiting for a lease to start.
  • You want it furnished, with utilities and cleaning included.
  • You may need to leave at short notice.

When a long let makes sense

  • You will stay for months or years and want a stable address.
  • You want to make the place your own and avoid nightly pricing.
  • You can manage the upfront payment that long lets usually need.

If you are unsure, start with a shortlet for the first few weeks while you look at long lets. You will learn the neighbourhood, the commute, the noise and the power supply at the hours that matter to you, before you commit for a year.

Whichever you choose, check the cancellation terms, the total price including cleaning and service fees, and what is included, before you pay.
