A moving-day checklist that actually works
Most moves go wrong in the same places: missing documents, no handover record and last-minute surprises. This list covers the week before and the day itself.

The week before
- Confirm the move-in date, time and who will hand over the keys.
- Photograph the current home and keep the move-out condition record.
- Transfer or close utilities, and note final meter readings.
- Book movers or transport and agree the price in writing.
- Tell your bank, employer and any delivery services your new address.
On the day
- Take dated photos and short videos of the new home before unpacking: walls, floors, fittings, meters, locks and windows.
- Test taps, power points, the water heater and the locks, and note anything not working.
- Write down the meter numbers and take a photo of each reading.
- Agree the list of defects with the landlord or agent in writing and ask for it to be signed.
- Keep valuables and important documents with you, not on the truck.
The handover record is the most valuable thing you create on moving day. If there is a disagreement about damage at the end of the tenancy, dated photos and a signed list protect your deposit.
