Living with roommates: agree these things first

Most roommate conflicts are not about personality; they are about expectations nobody said out loud. Talk about these before anyone moves in.

A good roommate match starts with a conversation, not a viewing. Before you commit, talk through the practical questions and write the answers down.

  • Money: who pays rent and bills, how the split works, and what happens if one person is late.
  • Space: shared areas, guests, overnight visitors, and quiet hours.
  • Habits: cleaning rota, smoking, pets, cooking smells and noise.
  • Lifestyle: work or study schedules, and how you each like to spend evenings.
  • Exit: how much notice if someone leaves, and who finds the replacement.

Meet in a public place first, tell a friend where you are going, and keep early conversations on iLIVV. When you are both comfortable, sign a simple agreement covering the points above and who is named on the tenancy.
